Duyên is from Vietnam. The first thing she tells me is that Danish women are beautiful. She explains that it’s because of their light skin. She also mentions the long fair hair. She considers Danish women as almost masculine: strong and tall. That’s why the mask I made for her is the one of a warrior with snow-white skin. The long, fair hair extends into military epaulettes, creating a figure that plays with masculine codes.

I think the Danes all look alike. They all wear sneakers and jeans. They only wear neutral colours. It’s quite the opposite in Vietnam : we love colour!
I also think that Danish women use a lot of make-up. They even wear make-up when they’re staying at home!
The Danes are beautiful, especially because of their white skin.
Danish women are strong and independent. They glow with self-confidence, but they don’t look very feminine.

How would you describe the way people dress here in Denmark, compared to your own country?

I think that the Danes all look alike. They all wear sneakers and jeans. They dress only in neutral colours. It’s quite the opposite in Vietnam : we love colour!
I also think that the Danish women wear a lot of make-up. They even wear make-up when they’re staying at home! Even young girls and students. This would never happen in Vietnam. Make-up is very formal, just like a uniform you wear to work.

The Vietnamese style is much more feminine than the Danish style, because our traditional dress is long and tight, enhancing the womanly figure.

How would you say the average Dane looks like?

The Danes are beautiful, especially because they have a white skin. Light skin is a beauty ideal in Vietnam. The average Danish woman has light skin, fair hair, a friendly face, but she’s not very feminine.

The Danish women are strong and independent.
They glow with self-confidence.
